National Day of prayer for Nelson Mandela

The people of South Africa honored former President Nelson Mandela with a national day of prayer Dec. 8, 2013. In the country's fourth day of mourning since he passed, they continued to remember the man they call the father of their nation. Mandela, also known as Madiba, passed away on December 5, 2013 at his home in Houghton at the age of 95. Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994 after spending 27 years in jail for his activism against apartheid in a racially-divided South Africa.

NBA stars were evacuated from a Mexico City arena Wednesday after a transformer burned and spread smoke on the court before a game between the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves. Players abandoned their warm-up and exited the 22,000-capacity facility about an hour before tip-off, an AFP photographer said, adding that the stands were empty at the time.
