GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- Thanks to KARE viewer Mary Jo for submitting her grandmother's recipe for polish dressing.
Mary Jo is still tweaking the recipe, which has been in her family for decades. According to Mary Jo, her grandma did not write out recipes.
1 ½ lbs. lean ground beef (browned and drained)
1 lb. pork sausage (browned and drained)
2-3 apples (depending on size) ---peeled and grated
1 large raw potato (peeled and grated)
1 ½ cups of chopped celery
1 large onion (grated)
2 (14 oz.) bags of stuffing (sage and onion)
1-2 cups of raisins
3 cups chicken broth
1 cup water
1 ½ cups of butter
Heat the broth, water and butter until the butter is melted, set aside. In a very large bowl, mix the prepared ground beef, sausage, apples, potato, celery, onion, stuffing cubes. Reserve the raisins.
Pour the heated liquid, (broth, water, and butter) over the dressing ingredients. Mix until blended, but not over blended. Add raisins to taste-1 to 2 cups. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Place mixture in a large buttered glass casserole with lid. (Could use a non-stick cooking spray)
Bake at 300 degrees for 2 hours.
