MINNEAPOLIS - Groundbreaking for the new Minnesota Vikings stadium is tentatively set for October 2013.

Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority Chairwoman Michele Kelm-Helgen announced the date at Friday's board meeting.

The $975 million stadium will be built on the site of the Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis.

The date is a bit later than the timetable previously mentioned by authority and team officials. They initially projected groundbreaking to take place sometime during the third quarter of 2013.

Vikings vice president Lester Bagley tells KARE 11 the October groundbreaking is an estimate. He says the most important thing is to hire a construction manager by Jan. 25 to ensure construction on the stadium can be completed by August of 2016.

Bagley estimates groundbreaking sometime in the 3rd and 4th quarter of next year, but Kelm-Helgen says both the Vikings and the authority "are good" with the timeframe.
