MINNEAPOLIS - Minneapolis City Council member Gary Schiff is taking the first step to running for mayor.
On Thursday, Schiff launched an exploratory committee for the 2013 election.
Schiff says the city faces a number of challenges including a homeless population that's doubled in the last six years and an increasing property tax burden.
He adds that more can be done to create jobs for city residents.
"One of the first things I would do is when the city's investing in infrastructure; the jobs are going to go to people in Minneapolis."
Schiff says he'll make a final decision on whether he'll run next month.
