ST. PAUL, Minn. -- You don't have to go very far in St. Paul to find a curling club. There's one right in Joe Metzger's backyard on Summit Avenue.

"We're getting the curling sheet all fired up for Winter Carnival," he said Sunday afternoon as he got ready for competition.

Joe spent weeks making the curling sheet. He's been looking forward to it since winter started because winter means the St. Paul Winter Carnival, something Joe has always loved since he was a kid.

He inherited his enthusiasm for the carnival from his mother. Each year they'd do different outdoor activities but this year Joe is hosting it alone. His mother lost her long battle with Alzheimer's last year.

"She'd be right here with us stride for stride," he said.

Joe continues the tradition surrounded by family and friends just the way his mom would have. He has only curled a handful of times and said if this year is a success he may try again next year.
