GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - State Trooper Allen Thill took another look Monday at the damage done to his squad car and says he feels thankful that wasn't seriously hurt after he was struck by a drunken driver.
"Everyone is OK and I get to see my family again," Thill said.
The 2-year veteran of the Minnesota State Patrol was rear-ended Saturday night while responding to a rollover accident on I-494 in Bloomington.
Authorities say alcohol was detected on the driver.
"It was a loud crash and I pushed forward," he recalls. "We did everything proper by positioning our squads where people should see them and had flares alongside the road."
Had Trooper Thill been outside of the car, the scenario could have been much different.
"I was sitting inside and belted in," he says. "Sometimes we're outside of the car."
The driver, who had another adult and two children in the car, is awaiting charges.
