MAPLE GROVE, Minn. - LeAnn Sargent was re-elected to the Maple Grove City council last year even as controversy surrounded her.

The 62-year-old is now facing charges of exploiting and stealing money from Robert Bobleter, her own father, and then lying about it in bankruptcy court.

"He gave her power of attorney, which she exploited, to put money in her own pocket," Mike Freeman, Hennepin County Attorney said.

According to the criminal complaint, Sargent's father struggled with a severe kidney disease and gave her power of attorney. She used that power to write herself checks and take advances on her father's credit card starting in 2008.

She is accused of stealing more than $200,000 to pay her bills and purchase things like spas and handbags. The complaint states she continued to steal money even as her father's health got worse.

In 2010, his condition got so bad he had to move in with her. The two agreed he would pay her $500 for rent and $1,500 per month for personal care services, according to the complaint.

Freeman said she never claimed that money when she filed for bankruptcy in 2011. Her father died last March.

Sargent is still an active council member. Her attorney did not return a phone call for comment.
