SANDSTONE, Minn. -- A wanted felon was shot by police Sunday night as he tried to flee a home in Pine County.
According to the Pine County Sheriff's Office, the incident happened just before 6 p.m. outside a home on Water Lily Road in Sandstone. A Pine County Deputy and a State Patrol Officer were attempting to pick up the man when he tried to drive away in a car.
The Sheriff's Office says the felon sped toward the officers, who were on foot and in the path of the speeding vehicle. Fearing for their safety, the officers fired at the man. He was struck once in the hand.
The suspect continued to flee the scene but was arrested about a mile away when his vehicle was forced into a ditch.
The suspect was taken to Essentia Hospital in Sandstone for treatment of his gunshot wound. The Pine County Deputy and the State Trooper involved were not injured.
The Pine County Sheriff says officers followed "standard protocol." The BCA has been called in to lead the investigation.
The suspect is currently being held in the Pine County Jail in reference to a felony warrant. Further charges are pending.
