ST. PAUL, Minn. - A 24-year-old Hutchinson woman was sentenced to 120 days in jail in connection to the assault of her 5-month-old son last May.

Lewis, who was accused of pinching her son's nose and covering his mouth during a hospital visit, was originally charged with third-degree assault, endangerment of a child and domestic assault by strangulation.

In an amended plea, Lewis pleaded guilty to the domestic assault charge. The other charges were either dropped or dismissed, according to court documents.

In addition to the jail time, Lewis will be on probation for three years and during that time will not be able to be in contact with her child. The boy is currently be cared for by his father.

According to the complaint, police responded to a 911 call from an employee of the Children's Hospital in St. Paul on May 2, 2012.

Lewis had brought the infant to the hospital the day before and said that she had observed the infant turn blue and stop breathing.

At about 5:30 p.m. on May 2, staff saw Lewis restricting her child's airflow by pinching his nose while covering his mouth. The infant "kicked frantically when he could not breathe," the complaint said.

Lewis told investigators that her child had stopped breathing multiple times, beginning in February 2012. She told police that she wanted to "do something so that medical staff could find something and help (her child) sooner."
