MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota State Patrol says three people were killed and five injured in a crash on Interstate 94 in Minneapolis on Sunday.

Troopers reported all of the dead or injured were among eight people inside a white minivan that overturned. The occupants of the other two vehicles - a Jeep and another van - were not hurt.

Lt. Eric Roeske says the three-vehicle crash happened shortly after 1 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-94 at 49th Avenue. The State Patrol closed a portion of the interstate for more than three hours as officials investigated.

"It's hard to see, it's somebody's family, it's going to hurt them when they hear the news of what happened," said Erik Medina, who was walking by the accident scene just after the crash.

"All things go through your mind, looking at certain aspects of life you know?  I just came from church praising God, and then you hear about people dying," said Calvin Smith, who saw the crash on his way home.

Authorities are still investigating, but Roeske says they do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor.

The names and ages of the victims are not being released at this time.

North Memorial Medical Center confirms three people are in critical condition at the hospital, with a fourth person in fair condition.

The fifth person injured is at Hennepin County Medical Center.  That person's condition has not been released.

The State Patrol plans to release more information on Monday.
