MINNEAPOLIS - Several blocks of downtown Minneapolis were left without power in the wake of an underground equipment failure late Thursday and early Friday morning.

The problem occured around midnight, impacting 14 major customers, including US West and the Star Tribune.

Sources say a fire triggered the outage.

Traffic lights were also impacted in the outage area, concentrated in the area of Marquette Avenue and 5th Street.

Xcel crews shut off electricity to even more customers around 6 a.m. while working to restore power, which was turned back on just before 8:30 A.M.
