EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- Authorities have suspended the search for a missing college student believed to have fallen into the Chippewa River.

They say the current was too strong and weather conditions were making it difficult to continue searching.

Police say the college student from Minnesota is believed to have fallen into the Chippewa River in Wisconsin on Friday night.

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Police Department received a call around 10:45 p.m. regarding a man who fell into the river from the university footbridge.

Crews searched the river on Friday night and again on Saturday but were not able to locate the victim.

Authorities say 20-year-old David Rodgers of Northfield is missing from his on-campus residence hall and matches witness descriptions of the man seen falling into the Chippewa River.

The Leader-Telegram reports the river is just a few feet below flood stage and the current is strong after recent storms and melting snow.

Anyone with information is asked to call the UW-Eau Claire Police Department at 715-836-2222.
