NORTHFIELD, Minn. - An eight hour standoff led to the arrest of a suspect wanted for a felony near Northfield.
Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows said police were called to a home near 315th Avenue West, north of Northfield, at 4:45 Saturday morning, after a woman ran to a neighbor's house saying she had been assaulted.
He said, "We were able to determine there was a subject inside." He continued, "We tried to make contact with him. We were unsuccessful subsequently. We also believe a weapon was involved."
The woman escaped the home. But according to Bellows, there was another person in the home with the suspect during the standoff.
Steve Hansen, who owns a boat repair business, works and lives across a large field from the home. He said police told his family early Saturday morning to stay in their home, preferably in the basement.
He said seeing the SWAT team and numerous law enforcement vehicles surround the home was a strange way to start the day. He said, "I'm out here Saturday morning. I usually work on boats until noon, to get people going and next thing you know, it's like a war zone it's kind of crazy."
He doesn't know the neighbors well enough to comment on what may have happened inside the home. He said the woman who lives there moved in about two years ago.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident around 12:30 p.m. Saturday
Bellows said no one was harmed.
