ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom has undergone surgery for what doctors diagnosed as a sports hernia.

Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher announced That Backstrom was operated on early Thursday by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia. Fletcher said in a written statement that Backstrom is expected to be fully recovered for the start of the 2013-14 season.

Backstrom, who started nearly every game of the shortened 2013 NHL season, was injured during warmups before game 1 of their playoff series against the Chicago Blackhawks. He was inactive for the entire series, with Josh Harding stepping in to play all five games of the Chicago series, which the Wild lost 4-1.
