ST. CLOUD Minn. - Highway 55 is open again, hours after a fatal crash involving four vehicles early Tuesday afternoon.
The Minnesota State Patrol says two people were killed and multiple others injured in the crash, which happened at Highway 55 and Dempsey Avenue, 2.5 miles south of downtown Maple Lake. Four vehicles were involved, three cars and a pickup truck.
Investigators say the driver of a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am was westbound on Highway 55 and was trying to turn left when the car was rear ended by the driver of a Dodge Dakota and pushed into eastbound traffic. The Pontiac was then struck head-on by a 2009 Toyota Corolla, and spun into a 2008 Lexus.
Images from Sky 11 indicate a violent crash scene with twisted vehicles, the roadway blackened and debris scattered over a wide area. First responders could be seen on the ground scrambling between vehicles.
The road was closed for nearly 5 hours while State Troopers investigated and cleaned up the wreckage.
