PLOVER, Wisc. - A 32-year-old Plover man held in connection with his neighbor's death first sexually assaulted the neighbor and then killed her before setting fire to her body and trying to hide it in Waupaca County, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Jose Luis Flores Aca, 32, is being held in the Portage County Jail on a $1 million cash bond ordered Tuesday by Portage County Court Commissioner David Worzalla. Flores Aca was arrested Friday in connection with the homicide of Jamie Koch, his neighbor in Plover's Chestnut Arms apartments, whose body was found dumped in Waupaca County.
Portage County District Attorney Louis Molepske said Tuesday that police believe Flores Aca entered Koch's apartment Aug. 7 and sexually assaulted her before killing her. Molepske told Worzalla that he anticipates filing charges of first-degree sexual assault, first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide and hiding and mutilating a corpse against Flores Aca.
Molepske requested the $1 million bond because of the seriousness of the crime and because Flores Aca is not a citizen of the United States. Molepske said he confirmed with federal officials that Flores Aca is a Mexican citizen here on permanent legal status.
"The community has been shaken by this, and a family has been left severed," Molepske said. Molepske also asked that Flores Aca's passport be confiscated, and that Flores Aca be closely supervised while awaiting future court dates should he post bond.
Flores Aca first was questioned when police canvassed the neighborhood in the 2500 block of Chestnut Drive after a town of Harrison farmer found Koch's remains in an abandoned car left on his land,Molepske said.
Authorities still are not revealing many details in the case, including what ultimately led them to focus on Flores Aca; where Koch was killed and how; or how Flores Aca might have made it home after leaving Koch's body in the car. Molepske said his office still was gathering documents from police and medical examiners Tuesday and won't have a criminal complaint prepared until Flores Aca's next court appearance.
That appearance is scheduled for Sept. 3.
