BRAINERD, Minn. - Authorities say a 50-year-old man died and a sheriff's deputy was injured after a shootout at a home south of Brainerd in Crow Wing County.
Officers responded to a call on Sleepy Hollow Road for an unspecified disturbance around 1:00 p.m.
When deputies arrived they found no one at the residence, but while still on the scene heard a single gunshot from the woods behind the home. There, they found the homeowner up in a tree stand.
After several hours of negotiating it appeared the man was ready to surrender but abruptly climbed back up into the tree and opened fire. One deputy was struck in the arm by a bullet.
Deputies returned fire, hitting and killing the suspect. He was identified Thursday afternoon as 50-year-old Donald Peter Johnson.
The injured deputy was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.
