MINNEAPOLIS - Students at 27 Minneapolis schools enjoyed their first of two unexpected days off when the district canceled classes Thursday and Friday due to the ongoing heat wave.
The 27 buildings where classes were canceled either had partial or no air conditioning.
"I think it's a good idea," said Celeste Rausch, a parent at Northrup Elementary in South Minneapolis. "You don't want kids in there overheating and sweating."
This is the first time in district history classes were cancelled due to excessive heat. Many parents were surprised when they arrived to find signs on locked doors.
"We just found out," said Rausch. "Now, we'll have to find a beach for the day."
Classes will resume after Labor Day.
