NISSWA, Minn. - Three construction workers were injured in an accident in northern Minnesota after part of a church under construction collapsed just north of Brainerd on Friday morning.
The Timberwood Church of Nisswa has been expanding since June, with the work scheduled to be completed by April 2014. The worship space is being expanded to meet the needs of 750 worshippers.
"It's my understanding that some roof trusses that were part of the construction project fell and are on the floor of what we would call our worship center," said Pastor John Just. "Then on top of that a steel high beam fell on top of those roof trusses."
Just said emergency rescue crews from Nisswa Fire, Nisswa Police, Brainerd Fire and the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department responded quickly.
"They were working out of scissor lifts on a basket," said Kevin Littman, Nor-Son Construction Director of Operations. "So they were trapped, but nothing was collapsed on them."
The men were trapped underneath the debris for several minutes before being taken to the Hospital in Brainerd for treatment.
The men were described as coherent and talking after the accident. Their conditions were not released.
Nisswa is about 14 miles north of Brainerd on Highway 371.
