MAPLE GROVE, Minn. - Police in Maple Grove believe a serial armed robber is responsible for an armed heist at a fast food restaurant early Wednesday.
Maple Grove Police Captain Keith Terlinden says they received a call reporting an armed robbery at the Burger King at 13840 Grove Drive around 6:12 a.m.
The suspect, described as a white male in his 30s or 40s, entered the restaurant carrying a handgun, demanded money, and then locked the two employees in the walk-in cooler.
He calmly exited the restaurant, then hopped in a dark Dodge Durango, possibly a 2005, and drove off.
Witnesses say he was wearing grey tennis shoes, a greyish Columbia jacket with a zipper on the shoulder, a black facemask with a white spot on it and unique gloves.
Terlinden says police believe he is the same man linked to approximately 6 armed robberies up and down the I-94 corridor between the Twin Cities and St. Cloud. At least three of those robberies have targeted Burger King restaurants: Locations include Maple Grove, Monticello and Clearwater. Other targets have included small restaurants and retail outlets.
"It's obvious he's comfortable in the way he does this robbery," Terlinden said.
That comfort he shows, and the growing total of robberies he's responsible for have police concerned about what the suspect may do.
"Historically you look back and see robberies become homicides. We don't want that," said Terlinden.
The Maple Grove robbery may provide their best chance of catching the suspect as it is the first time the suspect's vehicle has been caught on videotape. Police will enhance the surveillance videotape in an effort to get the license plate on the getaway vehicle.
The detailed description of his clothing could also help identify the suspect.
Investigators are encouraging anyone who knows anything about the robberies or the man responsible to call Maple Grove Police at 763-494-6189.
