KILN, Miss. - The ol' gunslinger is one win away from another championship.
As the Associated Press reported Tuesday, the High School team Brett Favre is helping to coach will face Tupelo in the Mississippi state championship game on Friday.
Favre's return to his small town to coach high school students at Oak Grove High School could have easily resembled Kenny Powers in the first season of Eastbound & Down. For someone with his documented indecision when it comes to walking away from the game, Favre seems to have settled into his role as offensive coordinator after getting involved in coaching at the same school where he would work out during his NFL offseasons.
One of the hardest things for many pro athletes to get used to after they retire is the sudden lack of outlets for their drive and competitiveness. Read this ESPN The Magazine profile of Michael Jordan at 50 to see just how much the greatest basketball player of his era has struggled with that role.
While the 44-year-old Favre is apparently keeping his future employment prospects open, there's not really an imaginable scenario that involves returning to the NFL as a player. So as he figures out that next step in between trips into the woods to shoot deer, the three-time NFL MVP is trying to win his first title since 1997.
Designing a potential game-winning series in front of a potential 60,000 fans at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson may not have the same thrill as throwing an 81-yard-touchdown pass in front of a sold out Superdome and worldwide television audience, but there's got to be some sort of competitive nature that would be fulfilled there.
Not that Favre isn't being his usual self when it comes to committing to a third year in the job.
"Who knows if I'll do it next year," Favre told the AP. "I really don't know. It's been a lot of fun. I enjoy it. It's easy and it's not too time-consuming."
It's going to be another offseason of crazy headlines in that Oak Grove school paper again.
