The Gopher hockey team is playing below par. The Wild have just two road wins this season. The Vikings, even though they may be Super Bowl bound, will be done in February. The Timberwolves are -once again - playing like the Timberwolves.
Folks, we may be in for a long winter drought of winning.
The hopes of any sanity rest on the shoulders of the Gopher men's basketball team and women's hockey team. (That is unless you're reading this from Northern Minnesota and then of course Bemidji State should give you plenty to cheer about through this time). The Gopher men's hoopsters will win plenty of games this year, but with their prized recruiting class decimated by suspensions, an NCAA Tournament berth is NOT a guarantee.
The Gopher Women's hockey team is ranked 3rd in the country and looks to once again be a strong contender down the stretch.
But am I the only one that feels weird about that fact that the state of hockey, is in a state of disrepair this year.
The Wild will take time to get better, but I don't think anyone who knows the game thinks they will be a contender. The Gophers have one of the most talented rosters in the nation, but continue to under achieve. And with the injury to Jay Barriball, they have now lost 2 of their top 3 scorers from last year's team; (Ryan Stoa, Barriball), with only Jordan Schroeder remains. Their schedule gets increasingly tougher as the season goes on, meaning the wins will be tougher to get as well.
So a plea to Gopher Men's Basketball, Women's hockey and any other sport that can give us some good news: Please win!
Or else, we just have to wait until Twins season gets here...On April 12th! (Barring any rainouts.)
