For the last three years, I have been fortunate enough to serve as Emcee for the Miracles of Mitch Foundation New Year's Eve gala.
The event benefits the foundation which does some amazing things in helping the kids and families who have to go through pediatric cancer.
It is a very family friendly event, and so I am able to bring my whole family with me to the gala which is held at the Airport Hilton.
This year, the formal program started at 6pm. We got to our room a little before 5, and started getting ready. It was then we realized, we had a bit of a problem. Our kids had their fancy outfits, but I failed to bring their fancy shoes. Formal attire with snow boots just wasn't going to be the way we rolled.
I looked at the clock. It would be close, but I could make it to the Mall of America and back with shoes in hand.
I hurried to MOA, and parked in front of Macy's. Another hitch... Macy's doesn't have childrens shoes! Are you kidding me? I am actually still flabbergasted by this revelation. Tons of kids clothing. Apparently Macy's vision for kids wardrobes is a bunch of well dressed barefoot children. If you can tell, I'm still bent out of shape. Because at this point, it's 5:12pm.
Nordstrom! They are like the shoe mecca! I run out into the mall and check the directory. I begin jogging. Stress level is getting higher. I still have to get back to the hotel and changed into my tuxedo, etc.
Another problem upon arriving at Nordstrom. While they do have kids shoes, and adorable ones at that, I just could not come to terms with spending $122 on them!
Deep breath. One last check at the directory. There's a Payless on level one! I start flying down the escalators, screaming past a bunch of teenage boys.
Get to Payless at 5:22. Find the shoes. Cute. Dressy black flats for the girl, handsome brown loafers for the boy, out! Girl at checkout cashier asking me what my zipcode was and if I'd be interested in a rewards card or something. My hands are shaking and I'm panting. No, just the shoes thanks.
At this point, I'm at a full sprint through the post holiday shoppers. It is downright comical.
Suffice to say, I make it back to the hotel in the nick of time. Only to find... I didn't pack my son's slacks. Happy holidaze.
In all seriousness, if you'd like more information on the Miracles of Mitch, and the great events they have like the Miracle Kids Triathlons and the upcoming Polar Poker Challenge on frozen Lake Minnetonka, check out:
