RED WING, MINN - After a few teasers, summer finally arrived over the weekend. The fabulous weather put smiles on practically everyone. Not wanting to waste a minute of this gift, we headed down to the charming town of Red Wing. The Cannon Valley Trail is a favorite of ours.
The trail runs 19.7 from Red Wing to Cannon Falls. The paved path travels along some of Southern Minnesota's most verdant pastoral scenery. With occasional glimpses of the adjacent Cannon River the path also offers a canopy of trees which provide welcome shade on a hot summer day.
Easy ride with just a few slight inclines to climb.
There's a $4.00 dollar per bike charge to help maintain the trail. Well worth it in my book.
Afterwards you can picnic or stop in for lunch at one of Red Wing's restaurants. We chose the rooftop at the historic St. James Hotel which offers views of the nearby Mississippi River. Menu offerings include tasty burgers, fish and chips and salads.
With remaining energy we also took a stroll around Red Wing's nicely preserved downtown. It boasts some of the best examples of turn of the 19th century architecture in the region.
Red Wing Confectionery owner Kathy Boos offers a warm welcome at her store on Main Street. Let her scoop up a refreshing cone or have a bite of your favorite candy treat. It's all home made.
