GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - I suppose everybody by now has their favorite Steve Jobs quote. That's what we do with really smart people. We scour their remarks for wit, genius and inspiration. Just like Shakespeare.

Anyway, here's my favorite bit of Jobs wisdom.

"Don't be trapped by dogma."

He said that in 2005 at a college graduation. It should be required reading at all meetings of religious fundamentalists all over the world. I think he was saying, think for yourself. Don't blindly follow some guy/gal or movement that you haven't really thought deeply about when you are alone at night in the dark.

If you need another person's rituals for life in order to live, you have missed the boat. Get some confidence in your own thoughts. And remember: It's okay to have your own thoughts. It's okay to doubt and (this is for any would-be journalists) it's okay to be skeptical. In fact, it's a requirement.

Whenever someone tells you there's only one way to do something, remember Jobs.

"Don't be trapped by dogma."

It's easy to let it happen. It is intellectually lazy, from my point of view, but it is easy. Don't take the easy road. It's usually pretty boring.

A long time ago, Jobs mused about what the world would be like if everything was beige. Walls, cars, garments, etc. Well, we would all fit in then, wouldn't we?

But there would never be a Steve Jobs or a Shakespeare or an  Einstein or an Edison. Think about it (the next time you're alone in the dark).
