BECKER, Minn. - A railroad spokesperson says at least one person is dead after a train collided with a car at an intersection in Becker Tuesday afternoon.
The Sherburne County Sheriff's Office confirmed 65-year-old Dennis McKeever of Chaska was killed when his vehicle was struck by an oncoming freight train. Witnesses told authorities the arms were lowered and McKeever drove around them when he was hit by the train.
The crash happened at the intersection of Highway 10 and County Road 25 around 12:30 p.m. Pictures from Sky 11 show a broken crossing arm where the impact likely happened and a badly mangled vehicle on its roof some distance away.
A map suggests that the vehicle was pushed or thrown between three-quarters of a mile and a mile after it was struck.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) spokesperson Amy McBeth says the gates were down, and the lights were flashing at the intersection.
A medical helicopter was called in to transport a victim, but McBeth says the lone occupant is dead.
The BNSF train was headed from Washington State to Illinois. There were 73 loaded cars, 19 empty ones and three locomotives. The crew has requested a relief crew to take over before the train moves on towards its destination.
Squads from the Sherburne County Sheriff's Department, Becker P-D, and the Minnesota State Patrol are on the scene investigating and reconstructing the accident.
