For the fifth straight Olympics, I am honored to be heading our team to the Summer Games in London!
I have never been to England, and am frankly quite excited to head across the pond.
While you can be assured I will front plenty of London lifestyle pieces with a Minnesota skew, and giving you a front row seat to what's going on at the games, the other reason we're there, I believe is to do our best in covering the local athletes.
Normally with Minnesotans, Summer Games can be pretty lean. "There's a weightlifter whose cousin once visited Bemidji? " Let's do the story!
But this time around, there are plenty of Minnesotans or athletes with Minnesota ties who have legitimate chances to make their respective teams.
That's where we're at now in the process... chasing down our Olympians or Olympic hopefuls. This is tricky, because so many of them won't know for weeks yet whether or not they'll be London bound.
Hard for us to justify trips around the country, pouring resources on these athletes now when in a month's time they could be an Olympic afterthought.
Still, there are some exciting locks, and some athletes that have already secured spots. People like Chas Betts of St. Michael who is on his way after winning Olympic trials in Greco-Roman wrestling. Susie Scanlan, a 21-year-old from St. Paul representing the red white and blue in women's epee in the sport of fencing.
It'll be fun telling these stories. And I am thrilled to be doing the drill again with Drill. John Drilling, my extraordinary photographer who first started chasing Olympians with me at the Athens games in 2004.
