MINNEAPOLIS - Move over tailgating, it's "railgating" that lured hungry fans prior to the Sunday's Vikings game.
"We're right next to the light rail and it's a whole line of food," said Cassie Larkin from Coon Rapids. "This is awesome!"
Seventeen food trucks lined up on 5th street near the Dome all in an effort to create a more vibrant game day experience downtown. Mayor R.T. Rybak pushed for the "purple path" concept and Sunday was its kickoff.
"We knew as soon as the new stadium was passed we wanted to have a more fun experience here," said Mayor Rybak. "There's a good mix of people with tickets and several without tickets."
It's an idea that had owners of food trucks ready to introduce themselves to a whole new customer base.
"Normally you have to come downtown to take in the food truck experience," says Ryan Bloomstrom with the Bloomy's Food Truck. "We're reaching folks from the suburbs. We're thrilled to be here."
Railgating will continue throughout the season during all home games.
