FARIBAULT, Minn. - Another former teacher at the Shattuck St. Mary's School has been charged with molesting a student.
Joseph Carol Machlitt, a former art and photography teacher at Shattuck, was charged Wednesday with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in connection with the incidents, which took place in the summer of 1980. The alleged victim was then a 14-year-old boy.
Faribault Police Chief Don Gudmundson says the victim, now 46, came to police in the wake of an investigation into alleged sexual abuse by a another former Shattuck faculty member, drama teacher Lynn Seibel.
The alleged victim told investigators that he had hit his head on the side of a pool in the summer of 1980 and the now-63-year-old Machlitt, a teacher and so-called "dorm parent," took him to the emergency room and then back to his apartment.
There, the former student says Machlitt groped him as he lay on a couch and performed oral sex on him. The alleged victim says he was abused by Machlitt on other occasions.
The victim, described in a criminal complaint as "JJ", says he didn't tell anyone about the abuse until he was 29 but has since told several therapists.
When first questioned by investigators in October Machlitt denied the allegations, but the criminal complaint says he returned to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) a few days later and admitted having sexual contact with the boy.
If found guilty on the most serious count of third degree criminal sexual conduct, Joseph Carl Machlitt faces a possible 10-year prison sentence.
