MINNEAPOLIS -- Orono senior Jordan Smith closed out his high school career in style last week. In the Class 3A State quarterfinals, Smith scored 29 points in leading the Spartans to an 85-76 overtime win against Columbia Heights.
Despite being in foul trouble, Smith scored 21 points as Orono won their first ever boys' state basketball title.
Smith was 10 for 10 at the free throw line, including 8 for 8 in the final minute of the game to seal the win. He was 16 for 16 at the foul line in the three state tournament games.
In the state semifinal, Smith hit the game-winning jump shot with 23 seconds left as Orono beat Waconia 50-48 to advance. Smith scored 22 points in the semifinal.
Smith was named to the Class 3A All Tournament team. He finished the tournament with 72 points in three wins.
