MINNEAPOLIS - Totino-Grace senior quarterback AJ LaPanta led the Eagles to the Class 5A championship while dealing with heartbreak.
LaPanta lost his grandfather Nov. 9th but continued to star for the Eagles in the state football tournament. After throwing for three touchdowns in their semifinal victory over Bemidji, LaPanta saved some of his best football for his final game at Totino-Grace.
Facing a tough matchup against Owatonna in the Class 5A championship, LaPanta helped carry the Eagles to their ninth state title with a 49-21 win over the Huskies. LaPanta finished 8-of-11 for 219 yards and three touchdowns. Totino-Grace finished the season with an undefeated 13-0 record and was ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press poll.
