MINNEAPOLIS - The Goldy Gopher statue was unveiled at the University of Minnesota's Homecoming Kickoff event on Monday.

Gov. Mark Dayton also declared Monday, Sept. 23 as Goldy Gopher Day.

The proclamation was read during an unveiling ceremony at Coffman Memorial Union.

The Goldy statue was designed and sculpted by artist Nicholas Legeros. Legeros graduated from the U of M with a Masters in Fine Arts. He has sculpted several statues around the Twin Cities Metro area.

The Goldy statue is constructed out of bronze and maroon granite. The statue is placed outside of Coffman Memorial Union on the east side of the building.
