MINNEAPOLIS - On the same day the Gophers and new head coach Rich Pitino began their season, fans were talking not just about the play on the court but news off of it.
Reid Travis, DeLaSalle High School's star basketball player announced Friday he would attend Stanford next year. Some speculated he might choose the University of Minnesota.
"It's a heck of a blow to the program here, because we could use another athlete of his caliber. We need more blue chip players here," said Ray Larson, former Gophers basketball player.
Larson added he thinks the team is on the right track.
"It's a bummer. You get your hopes up and hope for the best and this is what happens. But let's hope for the best and go Gophers," said Rhonda Linner, season ticket holder.
Travis told the media it was the most difficult decision he's had to make.
