Gus is gone.  During Friday afternoon's press conference, Vikings head coach Brad Childress said the team released the veteran quarterback.

With Friday's acquisition of eight-year veteran Sage Rosenfels, Frerotte became expendable.

Frerotte started last season as the Vikings backup quarterback to Tarvaris Jackson, but appeared in 11 games for the Vikings in 2008 after Jackson was benched.

Freortte suffered an injury in a late-season game at Detroit and did not play another game in 2008.   Jackson starte the remainder of regular season games and the Vikings playoff game against the Eagles.

The quarterback had been vocal this offseason, saying he wanted to play another season in the league, but as a strating quarterback in the NFL.  Last season was Frerotte's 15th year in the league.

The Vikings three quarterbacks heading into the 2009 season are  Rosenfels, Tarvaris Jackson and John David Booty.  Childress said Rosenfels and Jackson will compete for the starting job.
