MINNEAPOLIS - Aaron Hicks struck out in his first three major league at-bats. Minnesota's new center fielder was facing Detroit ace Justin Verlander, with wind and a 35-degree first-pitch temperature.
Not a memorable performance.
But the Twins rookie said he'd remember his first opening day forever. Not only was his family in attendance to watch his debut, but the 2008 first-round draft pick met his all-time favorite player, Torii Hunter, before the game.
Hunter now roams right field for the Tigers. The Twins are hoping that Hicks can become an even better player in time than Hunter, who was a fixture in their lineup for nearly a decade.
Hunter says he sees that potential in Hicks.
