GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn - Do-it-yourself expert and author Bruce Johnson, fresh off an appearance on the "Martha Stewart Show", has some great ideas to create this upscale furniture look for a fraction of the price.

Johnson suggests leaving the building to someone else and purchase high quality unfinished furniture and learn how easy it is to put the custom finish on it yourself. Finishing is the fun part anyway -- especially when you can personalize your furniture to fit your mood or décor.

Create the clean-lines of a contemporary desk that looks like it came straight off the pages of Crate and Barrel. Bruce takes an unfinished wood desk and gives it a deep ebony stain and shiny finish that results in a smart look.

A curved bedside table belongs to the Pottery Barn catalog, but you can get that hand-rubbed look yourself for a much lower price. Bruce will demonstrate the technique to creating a rich, old-world finish.

Restoration Hardware may feature versatile bar stools, but you can customize the look to your décor with bright colors that express your personality and create drama in any room.
